Our class was so lucky to have a special guest today. Honolulu Star Advertiser reporter Gordon Pang came to our classroom to speak about his job and the different components of the newspaper itself. He helped the newsies to identify what exactly "news" is, explaining that it's not NEWS unless it's NEW. Mr. Pang was so generous to bring each of them a copy of today's newspaper to bring home and share with their families. A big thank you to Mr. Pang!

Our newsies finished learning all the letters on the keyboard today! The last lesson will be on commas and periods. Their pinky fingers are really having to reach all the way up to the Q and the P.
They also continued work on their How-To articles, first writing in their composition books, then typing on the computer. Typing their articles is a lot easier now that they've learned all the letters! Our newsies started off the morning with their weekly (just for fun) keyboarding quiz. Many of them were very confident with the material! After the keyboarding quiz, they wrote a practice "how to" article, explaining How To Eat an Oreo. Some methods were very creative, including twisting off the top, scraping the cream off with their teeth, and breaking the cookies in half. After writing their practice "How To" article, the newsies started work on their "How To" article for the newspaper. A few of the girls enjoyed explaining to Mrs. Umeda how to do a cartwheel.
Our Punahou News Now! TAs are by far the best we've ever had! HIGHLY EFFICIENT, WONDERFULLY ENGAGED in all we do, SUPER CREATIVE and GREAT WITH KIDS are but a few descriptors to give you a peek at their daily contributions!! SO LUCKY are we to have Ms. Marissa and Mr. Jon!! MAHALO :-D Today the newsies brainstormed, then voted on a name for their newspaper. To be revealed on the last day of summer school! They learned more letters on the keyboard, such as Z X C and W. At the end of class, they had fun racing the TAs and seeing how many words they could type in a minute
After deadline Tuesday for their feature article, the newsies enjoyed a well deserved break and watched Wallace and Gromit: The Wrong Trousers. After the movie, they wrote a movie review as a class, directed by the TAs. Some key points were learning to write without giving away the ending, offering some opinion about the movie, and convincing the readers to watch the movie!
Our newsies spent the beginning of class watching a short clip on the newspaper making process, which they all found very interesting. One comment was made by a newsie: "I wish I could be a newspaper!"
The rest of class was focused on writing their feature article to meet the 9:45am deadline. First, they composed the article in their composition books, had it edited by their senior editors, then typed it on their laptops The newsies took their first (just for fun) keyboarding quiz this morning, which tested their knowledge of the 14 letters they've learned so far.
Today our newsies learned four new letters in keyboarding. With the letters they've learned, they can now type words like "use" "read" and "real".
Our newsies were so excited to finally begin keyboarding today. They were able to get their hands on their very own laptops, and practiced staying on "home base". No more "pecking" with just their pointer fingers! They are now learning to fully utilize all of their fingers.
