It's been a great five weeks working with your children. Keep typing, and keep on the lookout for new news!
The day has finally come! Our newsies were so excited for the newspaper's release, and enjoyed delivering it to the students and teachers they had interviewed. After taking a look at all of hard work, as well as their classmates' work, they finished watching newsies to wrap up the morning.

The newsies spent their last day with their laptops, practicing Dance Mat typing. During the second half of class, they enjoyed watching the Disney musical "Newsies", and are excited to come back tomorrow to finish the movie.
Today the newsies wrote a reflection on their experience this summer in Punahou News Now. Their reflection included things they learned in PNN, skills of a news reporter that they are proud of, how those skills will help them in the coming year, and whether they would recommend this class to a friend. Their printed reflections will be coming home tomorrow. Be sure to look out for it in their backpack!
The newsies worked hard on completing their newsie packets, learning about the components of a newspaper, as well as writing skills such as captioning a photograph and composing a good lead sentence. They also enjoyed dance mat typing, an online interactive typing program. This is something they can continue to do to practice their typing when summer school is done.
Receiving a well deserved break from keyboarding and working on their newsie packet, the newsies were so lucky to watch a magic show today in our very own classroom, courtesy of the summer school magic class. They enjoyed the card tricks, handkerchief tricks, and coin tricks.
Today's Fantastic Friday started off with a final keyboarding quiz for the newsies, testing them on all of the keys, including letters and punctuation. We were so lucky to have a second special guest visit our class this morning, Ms. Robbie Dingeman, editor of the Honolulu Magazine. She brings a background of expertise in journalism as well as TV. She encouraged the newsies to always be active and aware of their surroundings, explaining that there's always something more you can be doing to be a better, more accurate reporter. Thank you, Ms. Dingeman! The newsies continued working on their movie reviews today. They peer edited a fellow newsie's article, checking for things like capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. Many of them finished, printed, and are excited to share it with you at home!
After a hard deadline for their interview article yesterday, the newsies enjoyed watching Wallace and Gromit: A Grand Day Out. They then wrote their own movie review, composing a brief summary, as well as including a few of their favorite parts from the movie. As the conclusion of the review, they were advised not to give away the ending, but encourage readers to watch the movie themselves. They began by writing it out in their composition books, and hope to type it on their laptops to print and bring home later.
The editors are so proud of our newsies for working so hard today! They finished writing out the interview article with their partners in their composition books, then typed it on the laptops. That's a lot to accomplish in one morning!
The newsies took their third keyboarding quiz today, which included all the letters. They also started work on their final article, the interview article, writing background information on the student or teacher they interviewed, as well as information on the class.
